Your Starlink Standard kit includes four main components: the Starlink dish (Dishy), a Wi-Fi router, a power cable, and a base/mount. Getting these components set up correctly is straightforward — but where you place the dish matters more than anything else. A clear, unobstructed view of the sky is the single biggest factor in the quality and consistency of your Starlink service. Taking a few extra minutes to find the right spot before you mount anything will save you from outages and frustration down the line.

Check for obstructions

Before choosing a placement spot, open the Starlink app and use the Sky Obstruction checker. Point your phone’s camera at the sky from your intended install location. The tool overlays a map of the satellite corridor onto your camera view so you can see exactly which obstructions — trees, buildings, chimneys — will interfere with your signal. Only proceed once you find a location with at least 100 degrees of clear, open sky.

Position the dish

Place the base on a flat, stable outdoor surface, or use the included mount to attach Dishy to a wall, pole, or roof. Make sure the chosen surface is level and secure. The dish will self-level automatically after power-on, but it needs a stable foundation to do so correctly.

Connect the dish cable to the router

Run the dish cable from Dishy to your router and plug it firmly into the router’s Starlink port. Route the cable safely so it won’t be pinched by doors, windows, or foot traffic.

Connect the router to power

Plug the router into a power outlet using the included power cable. Place the router indoors in a central location for the best Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home.

Wait for the dish to initialize

After power-on, give the dish 2–10 minutes to complete its startup sequence. During this time it self-orients, searches for satellites, and establishes a connection. Do not move the dish while it is initializing.

Confirm your connection

The router LED turns solid white when your internet connection is established. Once you see that light, your Starlink system is online and ready to use.

Mounting Options

Standard Mount (Ground)

Use the included base to place Dishy on any flat, stable outdoor surface — a patio, deck, or open ground. This is the quickest setup option and works well when you have a clear line of sight to the sky at ground level. No drilling or permanent installation required.

Elevated Mount (Roof/Pole)

Use the included mount to attach Dishy to a roof, exterior wall, or pole for a higher vantage point. An elevated position reduces the chance of obstructions from trees and structures, making it ideal for properties with heavy foliage or nearby buildings. This option may require additional hardware and professional installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

On first boot, expect the dish to take 2–10 minutes to come online. During this time, it powers up, self-levels, and scans the sky to locate and lock onto Starlink satellites. Subsequent reboots are typically faster. If the dish has not connected after 10 minutes, check for obstructions using the Starlink app and confirm all cables are fully seated.
